Monica James
I am a 2nd year student studying at Grimsby University. I like to make and produce mixed media objects using paint, sculpture, metal and ceramics. Up until recently I have always painted using oils and acrylic. I am now using an mix of media including wire, plaster and ceramics. I like to create a sense of fluidity using solid materials, to make it look and feel like movement. Using a mix of media it is possible to have the opposite effect, soft into hard and vice versa. I am interested in shapes that occur through nature and geometry that can clash and come together to make a simple soluble object. I have visual Dyslexia and although I try to compensate for this I do not see things as others do. Angles and simple things like line and size can become quite difficult to interpret . I have now come to terms with this and I have decided to just let it go, it is part of me and the way I see things.
My work is still experimental.
My work is grounded in concerns about our environment and the way we deal with social issues. My recent work for example, uses sculptural forms to focus on the damage humans inflict on coral around the world. My main ambition is to create and to help others to create. My main ambition is to create and to help others to create. I believe that art is for all and no matter what age or disposition, art of any kind should be readily available. I went to college in 2010 and I did the teaching certificates which would enable me to work with adults in the lifelong learning sector. On this basis I would like to take art into the community.
